CMS
revises Process for Medicare National Coverage Determinations:
On
September 26, 2003 in the Federal Register, CMS announced a revision
to the process it will use to make Medicare national coverage
determinations. Notice 68FR55634 includes the general principles
under which determinations are made, the process for making determinations
through various tracks, and the reconsideration process. The changes
are effective October 27, 2003.
CMS
Announces CHAP Reapproval for Hospices, New Survey Conditions:
On September 26, 2003, CMS announced in the Federal Register
that the Community Health Accreditation Program (CHAP) has been
reapproved to a national accreditation program for hospices that
request participation in the Medicare or Medicaid program. The
deeming authority for CHAP will last until November 21, 2009.
CMS' announcement (68FR55616) and the standards by which CHAP's
survey conditions will be changed are contained in the Federal
Register.
Requirements
for Paid Feeding Assistants in Long Term Care Facilities:
On
September 26, 2003, CMS published the final rule with the requirements
for long term care facilities who participate in the Medicare
and Medicaid Programs for Paid Feeding Assistants in LTC. Ohio
is currently working on the state rules that will allow the use
of feeding assistants and delineate the curriculum that must be
used for the training.
